Sugary Soft Drinks and Gout in Men

A study published in the British Medical Journal found that consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks and fructose was strongly associated with an increased risk of gout in men. Gout — painful, swollen joints driven by uric-acid crystals — is most common in men aged 40 and older, and fructose is known to raise uric acid.

Why it matters: read alongside the coffee-and-gout note, the pattern is consistent — what you drink moves uric acid in both directions.
