Iodine belongs to the halogen family, alongside fluorine, chlorine, and bromine. Because these elements compete for the same transporters and binding sites, heavy exposure to the others can displace iodine from your tissues — creating a functional deficiency even when your intake looks “adequate” on paper.
Bromide
Found in brominated flame retardants (furniture, electronics, mattresses), some pesticides, brominated vegetable oil in a few soft drinks, and potassium bromate in commercial bread.
