Sugary Cola and Gestational Diabetes

A collaboration among researchers at LSU, the NICHD, and Harvard reported — for the first time — that drinking more sugar-sweetened cola was associated with a higher risk of gestational diabetes (diabetes that develops in pregnancy). The association stood out specifically for sugary cola drinks.

Why it matters: pregnancy is a window where diet shifts have outsized effects, and cutting sugar-sweetened sodas is a simple, low-risk change.
